Hank Chinaski (Matt Dillon) works in factories, warehouses and workshops to do what he really loves: drink, bet on horses, spending his time with women and, above all, write stories that is not published. With Jan (Lili Taylor), Chinaski shares a little relationship, more sexual than sentimental. She finally goes away after discovering that their relation was fake. In a bar, Chinaski meets Laura (Marisa Tomei). She makes him meet Pierre (Didier Flamand), a disturbing and fanciful French, who lives surrounded by pretty girls with who he maintains strange relations. Then Chinaski resumed hes journey. After a detour to his parents and an altercation with his father, he will finally go find Jan back.
