Bree (Felicity Huffman), a transsexual living on the West Coast, is eagerly working toward the final surgical procedure in her quest to become female when she receives a phone call from the son she didn’t know she had fathered. On his own in New York, Toby (Kevin Zegers) is a troubled young man who has just been arrested and is searching for his father, a persona that no longer exists. After her therapist urges her to deal with this part of her past, Bree reluctantly undertakes a cross-country trip with her unsuspecting son, whom she plans to remove from her life as quickly as possible. In the process, Bree and Toby both face their respective pasts and make important decisions about the future.
