Lucy Fowler (Ashley Judd) lives in a small town in Arkansas of the kind where everyone knows your secrets. During the day she works for building contractor Owen Allen (Stacy Keach) and is well-liked and respected for her strong work ethic. Most nights she is a very different person who opts for alcohol, men and quick sex in cold motel rooms. Her father Lowell (Scott Wilson) has recently returned home after letting alcohol and women destroy his marriage and his life. Shy and solitary he now lives alone. He goes to church but has few words and no emotional support for Lucy. Lucy’s mother Nana (Diane Ladd) has problems of her own with an abusive second husband. During one of her bar-hopping nights Lucy meets up with Cal Percell (Jeffrey Donovan). A newcomer to town he wants more of Lucy than just a brief frolic that ends at sunrise. Lucy has to figure out how to handle intimacy without the help of alcohol in a way she never saw at home. With help from her friends she struggles to transform herself so she can lay down the burden of the sins of her parents.
